Pre Treatment Instructions

Clients that share spaces like a shower or bed with someone else should consider treatments for them as well.

Patients must disinfect all shoes, shower mats, bedsheets, and rugs throughout the home before their treatment and must be diligent in keeping all items that come in contact with their feet clean and fungus free after the treatment.

Whenever offering the treatment to patients, all patients must be made aware ahead of time the

importance of strict patient aftercare in order to make the laser treatment effective as to not allow for reinfection.

On the treatment day, patients need to bring in a new pair of socks and disinfected or new shoes. (never worn before) to wear home once the laser treatment is complete. Thoroughly clean and exfoliate your legs and feet from the knees down and in between your toes. Remove all nail polish including clear.

Fungus (onychomycosis) Q and A

Nail fungus can affect your fingernails or toenails, although it is more common on the toenails. It’s a fungal infection that invades the tissues of your nails. Toenail fungus is both common and incredibly hard to eliminate.

The scientific name for toenail fungus is onychomycosis. This is the same type of fungus that causes athlete’s foot. It lingers in areas where the flooring stays damp, like gym and shower floors. If you step on an area where this fungus is present, it can enter your skin and begin to multiply.

How do I know if I have toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus announces its presence with distinct symptoms. Some things to look out for include nails that are:

  • Thicker than normal

  • Distorted in shape

  • Yellow, brown, or whitish in color

  • Lifted off the nail bed

  • Foul smells

  • Brittle, crumbling, or ragged on the edges

Nail fungus often develops slowly, so you may notice these symptoms worsening over time.

What can be done to treat nail fungus?

There are several over-the-counter medications that claim to treat toenail fungus, but many aren’t strong enough to make much of a difference. There are also prescription medications that are more effective but can take a serious toll on your body, especially your liver.

Laser treatments are a great option because they don’t place undue strain on your organs and are both safe and effective.

How does it work?

At Lifestyle Laser, the Astanza Duality laser is used to treat toenail fungus. This laser penetrates through the layers of your nails to kill all traces of fungus, even infection in your nail bed.

Treatments aren’t very painful and take just a few moments. There’s no need for advance preparation or recovery time. There is no down time.  Most fungal infections are eliminated with just one treatment.

When will I see results?

It takes time to see the results, but you’ll notice healthy nail growth in just a few weeks to a few months. As your healthy nails grow out, the damaged nail tissue is eventually trimmed away.

From that point on, it’s important to avoid walking barefoot on shared surfaces to reduce the risk of reinfection.
